It’s semi-dark inside, it takes a while for my eyes to adjust. The fact that the walls seem to be black doesn’t help. Or is it dark blue? The first thing I notice is a black and white poster of the Ramones on the opposite wall, by something that could be the window. It is thoroughly covered by a large piece of thick cloth stuck to the frame with metal pins. He’s put a lot of effort into making sure the morning sun won’t find a way to peek through, hasn’t he?
Does he ever air this room? Judging by the intensity and staleness of the smell – a mixture of incense and cigarette smoke with the sweet undertone of unsmoked weed (he’s probably got a hefty bag stashed somewhere) and something else i can’t quite put my finger on – the answer is: no, never.
No bed, just a thin mattress on the floor. The sheets are ruffled but seem clean and have been pushed to one side of the bed. The other side has been made into a seat, with a big cushion propped against the wall. In front of this ‘chair’ there are two cardboard boxes. a flat computer screen and an optical mouse sit on top of one of them. The keyboard is missing. The other, bigger box serves as a table. There’s a bone-coloured skeleton ashtray full of roll-up butts, a home made, heavily used bong and a large selection of beer bottles and coffee mugs. Some of them empty, some half-full. And all those different pills. Has he robbed a pharmacy? There are more bottles on the floor along with some dirty dishes and take-away boxes. And yet there's a kind of order to it all, it's not messy, dirty or disgusting. He keeps the place as tidy as he can without leaving the room.
A large low table by the 'window' is covered with black an white manga comics and piles and piles of drawings. Ooooh, these are good! There are more comics, books and magazines underneath the table and on the floor around it.
Apart from the mattress and the table there is no furniture in the room. There are some more boxes by the opposite wall. And another poster, Murakami I think. A ginger girl with massive tits squirting fountains of milk out of them. Nice. The remaining floor is covered in clothes, CDs, take-away menus.
